Thread veins
Thread veins are a cosmetic problem mainly on face and legs. We offer sclerotherapy treatment for the leg veins. This
involves injecting the thread veins with a solution which causes the veins to obliterate over the ensuing weeks. Usually
a course of 4 treatments of 45 minutes each are recommended. Each treatment session costs £300.
For facial veins we use diathermy to obliterate the veins.
More about leg veins
All you ladies and gentlemen who suffer from unsightly broken veins on your legs need not despair. You are not alone,
(50% of the population suffer from them), they are harmless, and they can be treated. These veins are abnormally
dilated blood vessels lying very close to the surface of the skin. Unfortunately they are usually genetic, but certain
lifestyle habits can make them worse. Standing for long periods, extremes of heat- sunbeds, saunas, hot baths and
showers, high impact exercise to name a few.
Because they are not necessarily a sign of any medical problem and they cause no unpleasant symptoms, treatments
are not available on the NHS. Treatment options include Compression Microsclerotherapy or Laser.
Sclerotherapy remains the most reliable treatment. It involves injections with a tiny needle, of a solution, into the vein.
The solution causes the lining of the vein to swell and become sticky, thus blocking blood flow. It is a fairly pain free
procedure and you can resume your normal activities immediately. . Compression stockings are worn for 2 or 3 days to
help close the vein. When the stockings are off the treated area will look bruised and the veins may look worse before
they look better but there is a 70-80% success rate. With the veins fading gradually over a 6 month period.
This treatment is available locally. Expect a thorough consultation, explaining how the treatment works, the success
rate, the number of treatments you may need and the risks. NO treatment is without risks.
If some of your veins are bigger than 1 or 2 mm in width you may benefit from getting them treated on the NHS and we
will happily refer you to the local vascular surgeon.
